현대 사회는 마약 중독, 담배 중독, 도박 중독, 인터넷 중독 등에 대해 명확한 기준을 가지고 있다. 그리고 이제는 게임 중독도 법제화해야 할 때가 아닌가 싶다. 마약중독은 그나마 사회적 규제라도 받지만, 게임 중독은 정신병, 또는 단순 몰입으로 치부되는 것 자체가 한 개인의 정신적인 피폐함으로 설명될 따위가 아닌 셈이다. 웃기지만 웃을 상황이 아닌 셈이다.

다만, 엔씨소프트에 소송을 건 Craig Smallwood 라는 이 사람은 참 알다가도 모를 일이다. 2004년부터 2009년까지 약 2만시간을 플레잉하면서 "Addicted Gamer Sues Game-Maker, Says He is ‘Unable to Function’" 이라고 하는데, http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/08/lineage11-addiction/  중독을 미리 사전에 충분히 예고치 않았다는 것.

A man who's spent over 20,000 hours playing Lineage II is suing NCsoft, claiming his addiction has made him unable to function in real life. Smallwood, who did not immediately respond for comment, alleged that the company “acted negligently in failing to warn or instruct or adequately warn or instruct plaintiff and other players of Lineage II of its dangerous and defective characteristics, and of the safe and proper method of using the game.”

리니지의 중독성, 나도 완벽하게 인정한다. 그런데 이렇게 아무것도 할 수 없게 됐을 정도인데, 어떻게 2009년도까지 리니지를 하다 빠져 나왔는지 일단 궁금하고, 이 정도에서 어떻게 소송까지 걸게 됐는지도, 궁금하다.

어찌됐건 역시 미국은 소송의 나라... 각 국가별 평가는 둘째 치고 리니지의 중독성, 그리고 사행성 비즈니스 정말 너무한다 너무해....
