Okay, at first glance, I thought the dude was going to drive his 2004 Mazda RX-8 around the block with his iPod Touch.

Instead, the iPod Touch is used to lock/unlock the doors, start/stop the engine, open the trunk,
and view the car’s telemetry data in real time (RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, throttle position, battery voltage, fuel level, etc).

The iPod Touch is not directly connected to the car. Instead, Jonathan used an Alix-1 computer running Ubuntu and hooked it to the car’s various sensors.
All of the car’s telemetry data is stored in a MySQL database.
To gain access to the data, he connected the RX-8 to the Internet and set the car to act like a mobile Internet access point, allowing any net-connected computer access to the vehicle’s various management functions via a customized webpage.
